Air Canada Jazz Selects Rockwell Collins for CRJ200 Upgrades

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (October 01, 2002) - Air Canada Jazz, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Canada, has selected Rockwell Collins to provide avionics upgrades for its fleet of ten Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft. The upgrades include installation of the HGS® 2100 Head-up Guidance System, the addition of datalink capability and dual Collins flight management systems.

Developed by Rockwell Collins' Flight Dynamics business, the HGS 2100 system will provide Air Canada Jazz with the capability to perform reduced visibility approaches to major airports throughout their route system. The HGS 2100 is currently in use on the Air Canada fleet of 25 CRJs. The system has been certified in Canada under a supplemental type certificate held by Flight Dynamics. Air Canada Jazz becomes the twelfth airline to acquire the HGS for the Bombardier CRJ.

Air Canada Jazz is adding data link capability through the installation of the Collins CMU-900 Communications Management Unit. The CMU-900, when combined with the Collins VHF-422A transceiver, provides timely and reliable data communications. The system provides standard air/ground data link communication including ACARS messaging, automatic out-off-on-in (OOOI) times, position reporting and airline operational communications. The system also supports automated down-link of engine and fuel performance data, helping to reduce operational costs.

Also included in the upgrades are dual Collins FMS-4200 Flight Management Systems with lateral and vertical navigation and performance management capabilities for terminal and en route navigation, including steering guidance. The Collins FMS-4200 features improved thrust management, time and fuel performance capabilities as well as ACARS messaging control. Full color graphical information can be viewed on the aircraft's multifunction display to enable eyes-up operation.
